Project Description
Seismic retrofitting of the Coronado Bridge has entered the third of four phases of construction. PCL’s contract is to retrofit the bridge in Barrio Logan from Main Street east to Interstate 5. Completion is scheduled for January 2001. All told, over 62 bents will require retrofit work. Most of PCL’s work is confined to the footings, bent caps and diaphragms. Sound blankets are being installed around the work areas to control sound levels.
A unique part of this project is that over half of the bents to be retrofitted are in Chicano Park. 57 colorful murals on the bents in the park illustrate this park’s colorful history. In January 1997 these murals and Chicano Park were deemed eligible for both the National Register of Historic Places and the California Register of Historical Resources. Part of PCL’s contract is to safeguard these murals from damage during construction operations. Additionally, construction activities are staged so that most of the park will be available to the public throughout the project’s duration. PCL is also contracted to upgrade one of the children’s playgrounds and install park improvements.
